Tai Wānanga’s four houses—Kawariki, Rengarenga, Mahoe, and Hinau—are inspired by a profound tongikura of Kiingi Taawhiao, which speaks to resilience, self-determination, and the nurturing of future generations:

Māku anō e hanga tōku nei whare, ko ngā pou ō roto he Māhoe, he Patetē.

Ko te tāhūhū he Hīnau.

Me whakatupu ki te hua o te Rengarenga.

Me whakapakari ki te hua o te Kawariki.

I shall fashion my own house The support posts shall be of Maahoe, patatee The ridgepole of Hīnau The inhabitants shall be raised on Rengarenga nurtured on Kawariki.

The houses represent the structure and sustenance for Tai Wānanga taiohi, embodying the different roles needed to build and sustain a strong community.
