Our Whakapapa: A Foundation for the Future

Tai Wānanga is a designated character school operating sites in Palmerston North and Hamilton. Our special character is woven into our inspiring vision:

“Kia Tū, Kia Ora, Kia Māori”

This vision empowers our taiohi to explore their “passion areas” and design an innovative learning pathway anchored by the New Zealand curriculum.

Our unique concept and approach were originally developed and founded under the guidance of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA). We honour the visionary Dr Rongo Wetere for establishing Tai Wānanga and Bentham Ohia for driving the original submission. This history gives us strong, enduring links to TWoA, connecting our students to a wealth of knowledge and future pathways.

Tai Wānanga was created to transform achievement for Māori students and to forge a 21st-century learning environment. We equip young people with the understanding, skills, and values to navigate a complex world and become productive contributors to society. The cornerstone of our practice? Using Māori culture and identity as the powerful foundation for taiohi to excel in the modern world.
