TAI WĀNANGA PĀNUI Ā KURA - Pipiri/June 2026
As we move further into the term, the crisp mornings and shorter days are a clear reminder that winter is truly upon us. With the arrival of the colder months, our focus naturally turns to keeping warm, healthy, and well. The change in season often brings a rise in winter illnesses, so we kindly ask for your continued support in helping our kura community stay healthy. Please ensure your taiohi come to kura in warm layers, and that they stay home to rest and recover if they are feeling unwell. Keeping our classrooms well-ventilated while maintaining a comfortable temperature is a balance we are working hard to strike, and having those extra layers makes a big difference.
Despite the chill in the air, the energy and warmth inside our kura at both campus remain as vibrant as ever. Our taiohi continue to impress me with their dedication, whether in the classroom, on the winter sports fields, or through their creative and cultural pursuits.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support as we navigate the term ahead. Please stay safe, look after one another, and keep warm.

SCHOOL BALL
We want to give our Year 12 and Year 13 whānau an early heads-up regarding this year’s School Ball so you can mark your calendars and begin planning!
The ball is a beautiful yearly kaupapa collectively arranged by several of the Wharekura here in the Waikato, offering a wonderful opportunity for our senior taiohi to celebrate together.
-
Date: Saturday, 19th September 2026
-
Host School: Te Kōpuku High School
-
We know many of our taiohi may wish to bring a partner to celebrate the night. Please note the following guidelines if your taiohi's guest attends a school outside of Tai Wānanga:
-
Guests from outside our kura must be approved. Both your taiohi and their guest will be required to sign formal guideline documentation.
-
These forms will be made available as soon as ticket sales officially open.
Early next term, Te Kōpuku High School will be releasing the highly anticipated Ball Theme and official event guidelines.
As soon as we receive this information, we will send out a comprehensive update to all Senior whānau detailing how to purchase tickets, where to access the outside partner forms, and venue timings.
No action is needed right now—just lock the date into your calendars!

NEW REPORT FORMAT
As we approach the end of the term, we want to share some updates regarding how we share and celebrate your taiohi's learning journey.
To align with the latest national curriculum changes from the Ministry of Education, we are introducing a refreshed, modern reporting style. This new format will roll out at the end of this term for:
-
Ruakura: Our junior taiohi.
-
Tū Toa: Both our junior and senior students.
Teaching, learning, and reporting work hand-in-hand to support your taiohi’s progress. The MoE has introduced clearer year-by-year teaching sequences.
These tools connect what is taught in the classroom directly to how we show progress to you at home, making it much easier to see exactly how your taiohi is tracking.
Instead of old grading systems, we will be using five clear, positive, and nuanced descriptors to show where your taiohi is achieving and what they need to focus on next.
Because this is a mid-year report, the descriptors are designed to show if your taiohi is "on track" to reach proficiency/Tai Nui by the end of the school year.
Here is what the terms mean:
| Progress Descriptor |
What it means for Mid-Year Reporting |
| Emerging/Tai Manawa |
Not yet on track to meet expectations. Taiohi require support to meet curriculum expectations or personalised learning goals.
| Developing/Tai Manawaroa |
Taiohi are making some progress towards curriculum expectations for their year level.
| Consolidating/Tai Kaha |
Taiohi are meeting many expectations and are steadily strengthening their understanding.
| Proficient/Tai Ariki |
On track to meet expectations. The taiohi is meeting curriculum expectations and is well-prepared for the next year of learning.
| Exceeding/Tai Nui |
Taiohi is exceeding curriculum expectations for their year level.
The ultimate aim is for taiohi to achieve 'Proficient/Tai Ariki' or 'Exceeding/Tai Nui' by the end of the year. This ensures they have a rock-solid foundation of knowledge to confidently dive into the next year of learning.

2027-2028 Strategic Plan
We are excited to announce that we are beginning our planning for the kura’s next Strategic Plan, which will guide our direction and priorities for 2027 and 2028.
To ensure our new plan truly reflects the aspirations of our community, we need your voice. We want to know what we are doing well, what we can improve, and what your vision is for our taiohi and our kura over the next two years.
We have created a quick, 3-minute survey to gather insights from our students, staff, and whānau. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us and will directly help gauge where we need to head next.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for taking a few moments to help shape the future of our kura!
